Your taste buds are the most important tools to help move your brew's extraction in the right direction. In this article, you will get to understand the flavor and qualities of under-extraction and over-extraction, how grind size can be used to improve your brew, and applying the concept of ratios to help you understand how you can improve the quality of the extraction.
Under-Extraction
-
Flavor/Presentation: weak, salty, sour, and/or having a quick finish.
-
To help resolve under-extraction:
-
Make the grind size finer, which will boost extraction.
- You can decrease coffee dose, which will increase the extraction.
-
Over-Extraction
-
Flavor/Presentation: dry, harsh on the tongue, and/or hollow in flavor.
-
To help resolve over-extraction:
-
Make the grind size coarser, which will lessen extraction.
