Ratio Eight Original: Machine Stops Brewing Mid-Cycle
If your Ratio Eight Original stops mid-brew, it could be due to a few different factors. Let’s walk through a few quick questions to help you troubleshoot.
Q: Did you accidentally tap the button a second time during the brew cycle?
A: Touching the button again while brewing will stop the cycle. If this happened, try the following:
- Remove the carafe from the base for a moment, then place it back.
- Press the button once to restart the brew.
Q: Was the “Ready” light flashing rapidly when the brew stopped?
A: A fast-blinking “Ready” light usually means your machine has entered Cool-Down Mode: a built-in safety feature that activates if the system begins to overheat.
If your machine enters Cool-Down Mode:
- Remove the carafe from the base.
- Wait 5–10 minutes before pressing the button or adding water.
- Once the “Ready” light stops flashing, you’re safe to begin brewing again.
Entering Cool-Down Mode is often a sign of internal limescale buildup. When mineral scale accumulates, it can restrict water flow and lead to overheating. To prevent this, we recommend descaling monthly. Click here to view our current descaling instructions.
Q: Has it been a while since your machine was last descaled?
A: If it’s been over a month, scale buildup could be the cause. Excess mineral buildup can:
- Cause the water sensor to misread the water level (stopping the brew early).
- Reduce heater performance, preventing efficient water heating.
To troubleshoot:
- Run 2–3 full descaling cycles using our recommended descaling instructions.
- Let the machine rest for 5 minutes between each phase of the descaling cycle.
- Between each full descaling cycle, allow the machine to rest for 10 minutes before starting the next.
- After you've completed 2-3 descaling cycles, let your machine rest for 10 minutes before brewing a new batch of coffee.
