All About Our Water Tanks

At Ratio, we care just as much about what touches your water as you do. That’s why all of our machines feature a cold water tank crafted from Eastman Tritan™ TX2001—a premium BPA-free copolymer known for its clarity, durability, and safety in food and beverage use.

What is Tritan™ TX2001?

Tritan™ TX2001 is a trusted copolymer plastic known for its safety in food and beverage products like storage containers, water bottles, and kitchen appliances. Its high standards make it a top choice for items we use every day—from coffee makers and drinking water systems, to personal care products and even children’s toys.

Tritan™ has been independently tested and is free from BPA, BPS, and all other bisphenols, as well as proven not to leach hormone-disrupting chemicals. It's certified to two separate safety standards: one for materials in contact with food equipment, and another for materials in contact with drinking water. Simply put, it’s one of the safest and most highly regarded plastic materials available!

Does Hot Water Ever Touch the Tank?

Never! Our machines are specifically designed so that hot water never touches the tank. Only fresh, cold water is added right before brewing, and since the water is heated after it leaves the tank, the contact is always brief and cool. This simple design choice helps keep your water fresh and your machine clean over time.

Because there’s no heat in the tank, mineral limescale and other forms of buildup that water can cause are less likely to form. This ensures that regular maintenance is simple, with no excessive measures needed to keep your Ratio's water tank clean. And since water doesn’t sit for long—about 4 minutes for a full batch on the Ratio Four, and 8 minutes for the Ratio Six and Eight—there’s little chance for microbial growth or residue to take hold. It’s all part of our mission to keep your daily brew easy, clean, and dependable.

Is there a Glass Tank Option?

We understand the appeal of having a glass tank—its natural feel and purity can feel reassuring in an age when many of us are more health-conscious than ever before. This is exactly why we offered a glass tank option for the Ratio Eight, up until early 2023.

Over time, we encountered a few challenges: because the glass tanks were handblown, each one had natural inconsistencies that led to functional issues for some customers. The design also made it possible for air bubbles to get trapped in the water lines, which could make it tricky to start a brew. Fragile by nature, the glass tanks were prone to shattering during shipping—an unfortunate and frustrating experience for customers opening their Ratio for the first time.

To better support our sustainability goals and ensure long-term customer satisfaction, we decided to discontinue glass tanks and now exclusively use precision-crafted Tritan™ polymer tanks. This switch means fewer shattered tanks, less waste, and a more durable water tank that you can trust to brew your favorite coffee for years to come.
