The Ratio Eight Series 2 was designed to deliver a balanced, consistent brew every time. To achieve this, it’s important to use filters that fit the basket correctly and allow water to flow at the proper rate.
Why We Don’t Recommend Melitta Filters
We’ve had reports of brew basket overflow when customers use Melitta filters—or other filters with a similar size and construction—in the Eight Series 2. There are two main reasons:
- Too Short – Melitta filters don’t extend high enough above the basket edge. During brewing, water can pool and spill over before it fully drains.
- Too Thin and Waxy – The paper used in these filters is thinner and coated in a waxy layer, which slows drainage and contributes to overflow issues.
For best performance, we recommend using Ratio Filters, which are taller, thicker, and designed specifically for the Eight’s brew basket. They provide the right balance of flow and structure, helping the water pass evenly through the coffee bed without risk of spilling over.
Freshness and Grind Size Matter
Another common cause of overflow is using pre-ground coffee. Not only is pre-ground coffee less fresh—losing its aroma and flavor quickly—but it’s also often ground too fine for the Eight Series 2. A grind that’s too fine can clog the paper filter and restrict water flow, leading to messy overflows.
For the best results, we recommend grinding fresh coffee just before brewing, using a medium-coarse grind that resembles raw sugar. This will help your machine perform at its best and ensure your coffee tastes as good as it should.
Our Recommendation
- Use Ratio Filters with your Eight Series 2 for proper fit and consistent performance.
- Grind fresh coffee beans at home, right before brewing.
- Avoid pre-ground coffee and shorter filters like Melitta, which can cause overflow and compromise flavor.
By following these guidelines, you’ll enjoy a smoother brewing process and a more flavorful cup, every time.
