Which Filters Should I Be Using?

You may wonder: how do coffee filters impact my coffee brewing experience with my Ratio?

Filters are possibly more important than you may think, and we will explain why. Coffee filters come in all different shapes, sizes, and materials, which can make it complicated to discern what kind or brand of coffee filters is right for your home coffee setup. 

Paper Filters

Paper coffee filters are the gold standard because they're often affordable, easily accessible, convenient, and effective. Paper filters will offer some of the best filtration, meaning a cleaner cup. Having a cleaner cup of coffee is important for coffee lovers who are fans of a clean cup, or those who are looking for the large coffee oils to be left out of their coffee.

Compared to your brew method, some filters are too short, some too tall, and some too thin. There are brown filters, and there are white filters. There are filters that have better drainage, and there are others that drain slower. Mindfully sourcing your filters for your Ratio are important to offer a quality cup of coffee and to prevent overflow.


Metal Filters

Metal filters are a popular choice because they are reusable, easy to clean, often made of quality materials, and are well-structured to make brewing easy and approachable. Metal filters often result in a more robust extraction, because they let in larger coffee oils and molecules. That being said, it's easy to make the brew cleaner by coarsening the grind size, if desired. 

Metal filters come in different levels of quality. We recommend filters by our friends at Able Brewing, who use high quality materials, including food-grade stainless steel. Other metal filters may still have a high amount of plastic, and this isn't ideal for many individuals who are looking to limit the plastic in their coffee setup.
