Your first brew!
Congratulations on your new Ratio Six. Here are some best practices to set you up for success.
Filters
The first thing to consider when brewing is the filters that you are using. Choosing the right filters will set you up to avoid overflow and ruined batches while brewing with your new machine.
We suggest starting with the Paper Filters for the Ratio Six/Eight Series 2 or the Able Basket Filter for best results.
Even with the correct filters, we suggest keeping an eye on the first couple of full batch brews that you prepare. For more information on our suggestions for filters, you can read our guide here.
Dose
Dosing the right amount of coffee will not only contribute to an excellent cup of coffee, but will also ensure an even extraction and smooth drawdown. Here are our suggestions for best ratios of coffee to water to start your journey:

Here's an article on how the ratio of coffee to water you are using might affect the final flavor in your cup. Don't have a scale? Here's a rundown on some of our favorites.
Grind setting
The setting you use to grind your coffee will determine the extraction of your coffee. It will also determine the speed at which water is able to travel through the coffee bed and out the bottom of your filter.
We suggest starting with a medium-coarse grind setting. This should be somewhere around the halfway mark on your grinder and resemble raw sugar in appearance.
If you would like more specific starting points for some of our favorite grinders, you can find them here. If you would like to see a more in-depth overview on grind size, we have an article here on why it's important and how you can use it.
Water
Water makes up over 98% of the liquid in your cup of coffee. Make sure that your water is clean and free of foreign smells or tastes for best results.
Make sure you use a separate, dedicated vessel to fill your water from. Never fill from the carafe! If you would like to know more, we go into it a bit here.
